With reports claiming Fernando Alonso has made himself available to Red Bull, Zak Brown says he would be happy to the see the former McLaren driver return to the grid with a rival team.
Walking away from F1 after four disappointing seasons with McLaren, Alonso opted instead to focus his attention on the World Endurance Championship and an Indy 500 run.
That yielded a WEC title and a second Le Mans victory, however, the Indy 500 wasn’t at all successful as the Spaniard failed to qualify for the race.
With nothing set in a stone on his racing calendar, Red Bull’s Helmut Marko recently claimed that Alonso had contacted the team about a possible drive should they opt to replace Pierre Gasly now or at the end of the year.
“Alonso’s representatives have let us know that he is available,” the Red Bull advisor told Motorsport.com. “But for Honda, Alonso is something impossible.”
But while the Red Bull-Honda door may be closed, McLaren CEO Brown says he would be very happy if another team opted to sign Alonso for 2020.
“Fernando remains an ambassador for McLaren,” he told Motorsport.com
“We have got a great relationship with him and speak with him about some racing programmes in the future that are not Formula 1 related.
“But we’re happy for him if he wants to get back into Formula 1 – because we don’t have a seat available – to go race for another team.
“We’d very much support him in that if that’s what he wants to do.”
McLaren won’t be re-signing the double World Champion having already confirmed Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris for next season.
