Sebastian Vettel set a blistering 1:36.4 on his first flying lap in Q3, but Charles Leclerc would hit back on the second runs to snatch pole from his team-mate – his third-straight pole position.

Lewis Hamilton was able to get within two tenths of Leclerc to take P2, but like everyone else Wolff was shocked with the pace Ferrari showed on a track that wasn’t expected to suit them, and admits that Mercedes have work to do in the race.

“You can see this is a circuit where you would have thought the Red Bulls and the Mercedes are going to battle for pole like in Hungary,” he told Sky Sports F1.

“But it’s an odd circuit, it’s different and I think they [Ferrari] did a good job today, their car is fast and we have to get our act together tomorrow.”

Ferrari’s straight-line speed has been largely to thank for when they have been competitive in 2019, but the Marina Bay Circuit is a technical track, so the Scuderia’s new upgrades are clearly doing the trick.

“They are gaining a few tenths on the straights, but they are also very quick in the corners, so they are just quicker everywhere,” Wolff admitted.

The driver on pole has won eight of the previous eleven races in Singapore, and while the stats are against Mercedes, Wolff believes they are very much in the fight for victory.

“The statistics are against us, but the race hasn’t started yet,” said Wolff.

“I think if Lewis has a decent start and if Valtteri is able to improve a position or two then we are in a good position.”
