W Series looking to support F1 races in 2021

There are reportedly plans being discussed for the W Series to become a regular support category to Formula 1 race weekends in 2021.

It’s been a difficult year for the series. In its second campaign, it was set to visit the F1 races in Mexico and the USA as a support series.

However, these plans never came to fruition as the entire season was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

What’s more, thus far the W series has supported DTM events, but that’s now in jeopardy as the future of the series is unclear following the withdrawal of Audi.

Given this, alternatives are being considered and, according to Autosport, Formula 1 is one of them.

“Plans are in the works to split Formula 2 and Formula 3 in 2021, with only one of the feeder categories appearing on any given Grand Prix bill,” the site states.

“That opens up track time for another support event.

“Currently between them, F2 and F3 account for eight-track sessions of free practice, qualifying and races, which could become just five in 2021, assuming that the single series featured at each event will expand to three races.

“The three spare slots could potentially be used for free practice, qualifying and a race for the W Series.”

When it was announced that the W series 2020 season was to be cancelled, chief executive Catherine Bond Muir clarified that it would still have support races at the Mexican and American Grands Prix in 2021 at the very least, should they go ahead.

“We are already working on an exciting new W Series race calendar for 2021, and we are delighted to be able to confirm that W Series races will feature on the support cards of a number of F1 Grands Prix next year, including the 2021 United States Grand Prix and the 2021 Mexican Grand Prix.”

The aim will now be to ensure the same happens on various weekends throughout the season, both in Europe and elsewhere. However, given the current situation regarding COVID-19 in the Americas, the former seems more likely.
