The Aussie is out of contract at the end of the 2018 season and will head into the new campaign without knowing which team he will be racing for at a crucial stage in his Formula 1 career.

The potential options for Ricciardo are to remain at Red Bull, or perhaps join either Mercedes or Ferrari as Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen are also out of contract at the end of the year.

Renault also expressed an interest in signing Ricciardo before Carlos Sainz took the drive once Jolyon Palmer had been axed.

Now Red Bull motorsport advisor Dr Helmut Marko has revealed that discussions have progressed a little since the off-season.

"We agreed with him a deadline," Marko told Sky Sports News.

"So as soon as this deadline is over we'll tell you if it's yes or no."

Ricciardo said in the first winter test that April was the month he expected things to develop further.

"I think realistically around April things will start to be spoken," Ricciardo said. "After a few races, hopefully I win the first few and I can have a powerful say in what I do!"
